Sign Petition?

One day one of the older women at the mills said that the mill girls were slaves, but I did not think so. She recited a poem to me ,but I still did not understand what the woman was trying to say. Afterward she tried to convince me by having me sign a petition to help the girls. I did not sign, for I knew I would be blacklisted. I wonder what you would do about signing the petition? I would appreciate your comments!

  11. I wouldn't have signed it because as only one other person was smart enough to realize was that these women would be blacklisted and fired from there mill jobs and unable to get other employment at other mills.

  32. I would sign it.
    Reasons:
    1. Don't have to work at a dusty, dark, and dangerous place.
    2. Even though I get paid, it's not enough to make me happy.
    3. Don't have to get up so early.

  34. Two Points.

    1) How could these women possibly be working more than 10 hours a day during the winter months anyway? In New England during the winter, there's only 10 hours of daylight MAX, and there was no electric light at the time. There's no way they'd be lighting these factories with torches, as the risk of fire was way to high.

    2) If they were to go back home to the farm, they'd easily be working at least 14 hours a day during the summer months. So, they either work at the factory, get paid and complain about 14 hours, or work at home, not get paid, and complain to their fathers about 14 hours (NOT).

I would sign so the women wouldn't be in the horrible conditions for as long as 14 hours. I wouldn't care for being backlisted as long as I help.
